Job Description::
The Scientist, Analytical Services - Innovation, researches, develops, adapts, enhances and validates analytical methods.

The position leads the transfer of analytical methods to other facilities and acts as a key technical resource for McCain’s stakeholders in Analytical Services. The Scientist applies advanced knowledge of food chemistry, sensory and nutrition to assess raw materials, manufacturing processes and storage conditions and their impact on product characteristics, quality and food safety. The position performs standard and advanced lab tests and operates, qualifies, calibrates and maintains core and advanced analytical and shelf life equipment. The Scientist provides technical input into support of research projects including sampling procedures, statistical data analysis and interpretation. The position also acts as a liaison with external laboratories to conduct research and testing using highly complex, advanced or specific technologies. The Scientist helps to ensure that the requirements of the ISO/IEC 17025 standard are achieved and maintained and plays a vital role in ensuring the integrity and quality of the laboratory data through continuous improvement.

Core Accountabilities/Outcomes:

Research, develop, adapt, enhance and validate analytical methods for the analysis of McCain products; write new analytical methods, validation protocols, reports and standard operating procedures (SOPs); train and supervise analytical staff to carry out SOPs for measurements, experiments and data collection when appropriate. This may include direct contact with external consultants or equipment suppliers to improve knowledge and functionality with the technology.

Design and execute original research supporting Innovation priorities; scientific principles are used to create sound experimentation protocols and execute data measurement and collection; coach analytical technologists and technicians to help collect data; statistically analyze the data and report the results according to agreed upon milestones.

Act as a liaison with external laboratories to conduct research and testing using highly complex, advanced or specific technologies.

Train analytical team members and other site staff on proper analytical techniques and equipment. Provides daily mentorship in laboratory work and equipment expertise.

Provide leadership to the Analytical Services team aligning with McCain culture and values.

Ensure the analytical laboratory meets ISO/IEC 17025 requirements. This includes the operation, qualification, calibration and maintenance of core and advanced analytical and shelf life equipment; follow and adjust SOPs, compile data and reports on analytic quality via control charts and other statistical methods; medium to high level LIMS management is required as well as sharepoint content management and organization.

Provide technical knowledge and expertise to other McCain functional units. This includes support and instruction on sample collection, design of experiments, proper instrument support and understanding of basic and advanced analytical service functions and expertise that can be delivered.

Aid the lab manager in implementing Key Elements of Safety (KES). This includes sourcing and implementing new and cutting edge safety training and equipment to deliver the safest environment possible.

Directly carry out analytical service requests for advanced and core technologies. Analytical measurements are made using ISO/IEC 17025 established standards. This includes sample reception, LIMS interface, bench level measurement, data collection, minor statistics and report out to appropriate customers.

Qualifications:  
Must have
M.Sc (Preferred is chemistry, biochemistry or food science) or B.Sc (Chemistry, biochemisty of Food Science) with minimum 2-3 years experience in a laboratory or research setting is required. A masters level or experienced B.Sc. ensures a foundation in analytical theory and understanding. The higher education provides the required baselines in chemistry, statistics, maths, literature searches, technical writing as well as exposure to analytical instrumentation.
Experience within a laboratory is important as it provides understanding in laboratory quality management and analytical throughput requirements. Requires previous experience using analytical equipment including development of analytical methods. Independent research experience is also required, in which the Scientist, Analytical Services may have encountered hurdles and used problem solving skills to overcome the obstacles. Report, thesis or technical writing (SOPs) is also required experience. While published material is not prerequisite, it would be considered a major asset.
